The Eppley Institute is dedicated to meeting the needs of park, recreation, and public land organizations. As a unit of Indiana University’s Department of Recreation and Park Administration, Eppley combines academic expertise with real-world experience to design practical solutions that work.

History and Mission
The Eppley Institute was founded in 1993 by Indiana University's Department of Recreation and Park Administration. The institute's first director was James Ridenour, former director of the National Park Service and former director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The institute was named in honor of Dr. Garrett G. Eppley, a pioneer in recreation education, and the former chair of Indiana University's Department of Recreation and Park Administration. The mission of the institute is to partner with recreation, park, and public land organizations to enhance access, choice, and quality of natural, cultural, and recreational experiences.

Our Approach
The Eppley Institute is a unique organization that excels at providing personal, custom service for each of our partners. We recognize that each agency that chooses to work with us has a different culture and a different set of expectations, business practices, and goals. Our dedication to inquiry, responsiveness, and excellence allows us to meet each partner's individual needs.
  • Inquiry is fundamental to all of our services. By analyzing issues and conducting research, we identify and address each partner's needs.

  • Responsiveness to our partners' timelines and objectives is central to our approach. We document our decisions, meet our commitments, and adapt our methods in order to support our partners.

  • Excellence is intensely pursued by the Eppley Institute staff in providing services, creating products, and advocating for the right solutions for our partners.
